Starting Out
Tuesday I headed overland to Phnom Penh from Pattaya. I didn't have any problems except for the fact that I had to meet the bus at 6AM in the morning to be able to make it to the immigration checkpoint in Koh Kong before they closed at 5PM. The trip was rather uneventful but the brothel section in Koh Kong had really gone downhill since my last visit there one year ago. There was a new road from Koh Kong to Phnom Penh that had been completed since my last visit so I decided to give that route a try. The overland route is quite a bit easier than going via the ferry to Sihanoukville and then taking the bus to Phnom Penh from there and shaved several hours off of the total travel time. Here is a picture of one of the ferry crossings. I had the equivalent of first class fare on the trip; I had the entire front seat to myself in the red pickup on the right. The price was right although I paid $15 instead of the normal $10 so I would have the whole seat to myself. I did enjoy interacting with the locals and for better or worse I didn't see another foreigner the whole trip.
Yesterday afternoon I headed out to Svay Pak (K11) and had lunch at the Home Away From Home Café along with Kram, his GF Phuong, and a couple of other friends. It seems that the crackdown in Phnom Penh is only a memory now and all of the shops were doing a brisk business (I'm adding this two months later but at the end of my Phnom Penh visit, Svay Pak was being shut down on a regular basis). I headed down to Number Ten and did a doubleheader with a couple of old friends for my first day. Since I live in Phnom Penh at least two months out of the year it almost seems like home and it was good to be back and see my old friends again. Cambodia has a charm that is hard to describe but besides that it just seems to me that the girls appreciate me more over here. In Pattaya or Bangkok the better-looking girls don't care if you take them or not, it you don't the next guy will so they don't worry about it.
Last night several of us guys met up at the Red House Restaurant in Phnom Penh for dinner and then headed off to Martini's. Beside myself there was Frequentflyer and his beautiful mia noi Yang, Kram, Poppalorn, Harry Seaman, and Clark Kent. At Martini's the band was going strong and there were plenty of ladies in attendance looking for a companion for the evening. I don't know if the Martini band has gotten better or if I have just been listening to too many Pattaya bands lately but they sure sounded a lot better than last trip. Here is a picture of Mum, a 20-year-old Khmer babe that I met. Short time was $10 back at the hotel for a couple of hours and we had a great time. She had a fantastic smile and personality as well as her other skills so she was a pleasure to be with all around.
